Europe on the ground – Regional strategies for action to promote cross-border youth mobility

Wednesday, 29.03.2017 • 09:00 h • Ministry for Education, Youth and Sport Brandenburg

Europe determines the environments in which young people grow up (education, job market, leisure, friendships) and demands that they develop the associated skills (languages, interculturality). Young people in Europe grow up to know other cultures and people as a given. They enjoy new experiences, broaden their prospects and play an active role in shaping a democratic Europe. Highlighting this as a major success of the European integration process is imperative. Indeed, in view of the current nationalist sentiment, the reintroduction of border controls and the endangerment of the European project as a whole, this must return to the spotlight.
Against this backdrop, local communities are faced with the challenge of developing and institutionalising new strategies for action in the long term. They need to spark enthusiasm for the European ideal among young people and provide a counterweight to the spread of hatred and nationalism by promoting tolerance and open-mindedness in local communities.
Strategies for action that strengthen cross-border youth mobility encourage the development of Europe-friendly communities and translate impulses from the EU Youth Strategy into real benefits for young people.
